Interpret this report

HONEST, and deliberately unflattering where it needs to be. Every DOT number we publish is re-checked against the live FMCSA census and bucketed by the status FMCSA itself reports. "inactive" means FMCSA no longer shows the registration as active — the company may still trade, but we should not be presenting a lapsed registration as a current one. This is the number to watch: it is the honest measure of whether this directory is a current register or a decaying copy of one.

Counts describe records in this directory. Companies can appear in more than one service or port category, so categories should not be added to estimate a market total.
